SUMMARY:Talk: Making Conservation More Effective Through Artificial Intelligence
DESCRIPTION:Open to the Public \nConserving the planet’s biodiversity poses immense challenges for humanity\, given the need to address complex problems require input from policy\, science and other disciplines. Effective conservation practice depends on identifying the status of species and communities\, identifying the threats and determining the most effective actions. \nIn this seminar William Sutherland will discuss the importance of collating the evidence for the effectiveness of actions\, consider the challenges\, and describe the solutions. He will then describe how AI is transforming evidence reviews. He will also discuss how AI can undermine science due to the ease of creating false information and will consider means of reducing this problem. \nSpeaker: William Sutherland \nWilliam Sutherland is an ecologist and conservation scientist who has showed how behaviour and population ecology could be linked through game theory models of the decisions individuals make and that such models can then be used to predict the consequences of future states\, such as agricultural change or climate change. This was summarised in his Oxford University Press monograph From Individual Behaviour to Population Biology. \nMuch of his career has been devoted to developing novel processes for integrating science and policy including horizon scanning and evidence-based conservation. With over eleven hundred named collaborators he has created the website www.conservationevidence.com (which reviews the evidence for the effectiveness of 3155 conservation actions)\, and a set of tools for making evidence-based decisions and embedding evidence into practice. This is summarised in his recent edited open-access book Transforming Conservation: a Practical Guide to Evidence and Decision Making. He regularly advises government and conservation organisations. \nRegistration\nTo attend\, please register at: https://tinyurl.com/NSSTalk1 \nNote:\n• Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis.\n• Registration will close once the maximum number of participants is reached\, or on closing date.\n• Only confirmed participants will be contacted by email\, after the closing date. \nMax. No. of Participants\n30 pax \nClosing Date\n13 Jan 2026\, Tuesday \nEnquiries\nFor any enquiries\, please contact Shreeyaa at shreeyaa@nss.org.sg

SUMMARY:Plant Painting Session at Singapore Botanic Gardens
DESCRIPTION:NSS Members Only \nIn this art session\, participants will learn to sketch and paint plants\, helping them observe and remember key features of different species. Held at the Singapore Botanic Gardens\, this session is also a follow-up to our past plant walks\, where participants learned to identify various plants. Those who have not attended previous plant walks are most welcome to join as this is a great opportunity to learn about plant morphology through art. \nNo art background/experience is needed\, and families are encouraged to join. The session will start with the basics of sketching and colour mixing. To make the most of this learning experience\, we encourage all participants to try their hand at sketching and/or painting during the session. \nActivity Lead: Dr Sng Bee Bee & Ms Jayasree Alamuru\, NSS Plant Group Members \nRegistration
\nTo attend\, please register at: https://tinyurl.com/NSSPlantWalk1\n\n  \n\n– Registration is on a first-come-first-serve basis\n\n– Non-members may be accepted if there are excess places by the closing date.\n\n\n– Registration will close once the maximum number of participants is reached\, or on closing date.\n\n\n\n– Only confirmed participants will be contacted by email\, after the closing date\, with details on the meeting time and place.\n\n\n  \n\n\nRegistration Closing Date\n11 January 2025\, Sunday \nMaximum No. of Participants\n20 \nThings to Bring/Wear \n\n– Please come dressed in comfortable clothing and wear proper covered footwear\n– Sun protection (hat\, sunglasses\, and sunscreen)\n– Water for hydration\n– Rain gear (poncho\, umbrella)\n– Insect repellent\n– Your own painting materials: paper\, pencil\, pens\, colour pencils\, watercolours\n\nEnquiries\nFor enquiries\, please contact Shreeyaa at shreeyaa@nss.org.sg

SUMMARY:Invasive Species Management Programme
DESCRIPTION:Open to the Public \nInvasive species may look harmless\, but they can cause real damage to our native habitats. One such plant is the Zanzibar Yam (Dioscorea sansibarensis) — a fast-growing vine that strangles native plants and disrupts forest ecosystems. \nBe part of our Invasive Species Management Programme\, where you’ll work alongside our volunteers to help monitor and remove this invasive species and safeguard Singapore’s biodiversity. Through this hands-on activity\, you’ll: \n– Learn how invasive species affect our forests\n– Take part in meaningful action to protect native plants\n– Play a role in conserving Singapore’s natural heritage \nThis activity is perfect for nature lovers\, families\, and anyone who wants to make a difference. Every vine you help remove is a step toward restoring balance in our forests. 🌱 \nMax. No. of Participants\n20 pax \nRegistration\nTo attend\, please register at https://tinyurl.com/NSSNMMRp \nNote:\n– A briefing email will be emailed to all successful participants. \nEnquiries\nFor enquiries\, contact Kerry at kerry@nss.org.sg.
