Flowering Cycad

Postby gohsiguim » Thu Jan 14, 2010 9:56 pm

The picture shows the male cone of the Cycas, It is at the corner of the National Library, at the junction of Middle Road and Victoria Street. I passed by it twice in the last two weeks.

During the first time, I encountered a strong, initially overpowering scent, then saw the flower in full blossom and exuding that strong scent. It was not sweetish, more like that of a herbal Ricola.

One week later, it remained the same, the scent remained strong. I looked around at the other Cycas but did see another flowering one, male or female.

Please see the picture taken with my mobile phone. It may been in this state for a while and will be like so for a couple of more weeks perhaps.

Thanks Mr KF Yap for additional input: The male cone is known as a microsporohyll.
