The Duke's a Lady or a Gentleman?

Postby amytsang » Sat Jul 28, 2012 6:04 pm

I was told that the Purple Duke I had photographed recently is a female. I looked up another Purple Duke shot I had taken some time back and it looks slightly different - can I confirm it is the male Purple Duke? - the real duke, and the recent one is the duchess! :pdr:

Thanks very much for the detailed clarification, Lemon. Much appreciated. Yes, I can see the males are bluer! Thanks too for posting the pix of the female showing her top side. I've never seen this - good you got that shot. Every time I see the Purple Duke butterfly it is hiding under a leaf, so that is a rare shot! :D
