ID help please--insects and spiders

Postby heyjudi » Mon May 02, 2011 11:20 pm

There are several insects and spiders that I saw at the Singapore Botanic Gardens about a week ago that I have either been unable to identify or would appreciate confirmation of the id. :pdr:

1. The following two photos are of large beetles that seemed to be in abundance in a clump of large-leafed plants. Their backs were very reflective of the bright sunlight.

2. This spider was quite small and was in a small web that was very tightly attached to a large leaf.

3. This insect was quite small--no bigger than the fingernail on my little finger but very brightly coloured.

4. This spider has lost a leg. I was expecting it would be easy to id with the dramatic markings but haven't found something like it. Perhaps that is because the markings are on the underside? I was unable to see its upperside.

5. I believe this is a Hasselt's Spiny Spider. Confirmation would be appreciated.

Judi, the first 2 green bugs are Stink bug. The small red bug is actually the juvenile of this green Stink bug. This Stink bug goes through different stages, from red rectangular shape to yellow befor morphing into the final adult stage which is in the first 2 photos.

Thanks for the info! I am on such a steep learning curve here in Singapore. The abundance of things to observe and enjoy here is breathtaking.
