Spiny spider with bright orange carapace

Postby laurence leong » Sat Feb 23, 2013 10:44 am

We found this very colorful spider at USR. The spider must have evolved this bright orange color to advertise its unpleasant taste to potential predators, but because the size of the carapace slows down its movement, perhaps it may be better off without the large shell.

That's a Curved Spiny Spider (Gasteracantha arcuata), Laurence - a rare specimen, formerly only found on Bukit Timah Hill

Wow! What a "spine chilling" collection you have. Did you notice that the Curved Spiny spider is actually eating something? :giggle:

It's an insect that has been sucked beyond recognition!
