Fallen tree trunks and other dead plant material are ideal substrates for fungi to thrive. They are there to play their role to recycle nutrients in the forest's circle of life.

These look familiar? Are they same as the dried forms available in packets?

Could be, but do not gather them to try. Just appreciate them and leave them to do their job.
