Strange Caterpillar - Need ID :)

Postby navipath » Fri Mar 25, 2011 7:23 am

Hi all,

Been away for quite awhile now. I found this strange caterpillar in my home. Apparently it hitchhiked a ride on my dad's back from a trip to the supermarket. Caused him some discomfort. He said it was itchy so I was wondering what could have caused the itchiness. I found a culprit when it fell off my dad's back.

See picture and I hope someone can ID this:

If someone can furnish details on what to feed this, I'd appreciate it. One of the weirdest caterpillars I've seen.

Hello Plain Tiger,

I'm not sure about that. He told me he was at the McDonalds' outlet near the supermarket and that was when it started to itch. I believe it dropped from one of the trees nearby. It has a reddish-orange head with same coloured feet.

Thanks Angie. Are you able to positively ID the species in question? I'm trying to know what the host plant is so I can release this little guy. Not many trees near where I live and I ran out of fresh veggies in the fridge.

Edit: Is this possibly the caterpillar of Orgyia antiqua aka Rusty Tussock Moth?
