Mycalesis species - id help needed

Postby Maris UK » Fri Aug 14, 2009 2:22 am

On holiday in Malaysia I photographed several different Mycalesis species. I have identified M. fusca and M. janardana myself, but I'm struggling with the attached species. I thought the first maybe M. distanti or intermedia or mineus, the second maybe M. orseis and the third M. perseus, but the more I look in the field guides the more confused I get!!! I don't know which are the commonest species or are in the correct locality. Please can someone help me with these id's. Thank you.

The first was seen on 1st May at the Clearwater Sanctuary, near Ipoh

The second was seen on 1st May at Bukit Larut (Maxwell Hill), Taiping

The third was seen on 26th April at the Adventure trail, Fraer's Hill

The 1st one looks like a common species of bush brown to me -- Mycalesis mineus macromalayana (Dark Brand Bush Brown) .

The 2nd one is confirmed a Mycalesis orseis nautilus (Purple Bush Brown)

and the 3rd one I suspect is a Mycalesis perseus cepheus (Dingy Bush Brown), as the ocellus (eye-spot) in space 2 of the hindwing below is moved inwards and out of line with the other ocelli adjacent to it.

maris,
I agree with Fujis2. These are very confusing and are not easy to id without referring to the id keys.
