Athyma - id help needed

Postby Maris UK » Mon Aug 17, 2009 10:10 pm

On holiday in Malaysia in April and May I photographed the following, similar, butterflies.

The first was photographed at Ulu Geroh near Gopeng on 29th April which I identified as Colour Sergeant, Athyma nefte

The second was photographed in the vicinity of a stream alongside the new road from Ipoh to the Cameron Highlands on 30th April. It is quite similar to the species above, but I've assumed it is a different species. However, I've been unable to identify it. Please can someone let me know if they are both Colour Sergeant or, if not, what they are?

the 2nd one, could be Athyma cama, note the smaller white spots at apex and orange sub apical spot. I also noted the photo taken near montana (Ipoh to the Cameron Highlands), where A. cama is more common than A. nefta.
