We came across this yellow color 'Rambutan' during our butterfly walk in the Central Catchments area.

Any idea what is the name of this plant ?

Hi Gan,

What lovely pictures of Uncaria cordata!

Another species is Uncaria gambir, which was cultivated in Singapore even before 1819 by immigrant Chinese setthers or squatters. Thereafter when favourable prices caused by rising demand for dyeing and tanning materials, from China, Java, USA and Britain, large areas of our forests were steadily cleared for such plantations. Gambier and pepper were the successful commercial crops in the early years. The extraction of the resinous substance from boiling the gambier leaves and twigs required abundant and cheap fuel, and the surrounding virgin forests were felled to provide for that too!
