Black Rajah from Bukit Timah

Postby anuj » Mon Jun 24, 2013 7:44 pm

Simon Chan and I were out as usual to Bukit Timah nature reserve this morning for fieldwork. It was a regular day off the trail making our way up and down the terrain. Ok start counting. Cruiser, Commander, Arhopalas, Awls. Oh well. Yellow Banded Awl....nice. Its getting better. Adrenaline rush already.

A minute passes low and behold. Simon's sharp eyes spot a wing among the leaf litter ...'rare rare Black Rajah!!!'. Only part of the body and 2 legs still intact...looks eaten by a spider. The intact wings allowed us confirm the identification.

Black Rajah (Charaxes solon) is listed as Critically endangered in Singapore with very few records in recent years. Recent records of Black Rajah include 2 sightings in 2009 one by Richard Ong from MacRitchie and second by Anthony Quek from Chestnut area. Other records of Black Rajah exist from Bukit Timah, Nee Soon area where the species was seen more than 10 years ago.

Would be great if anyone could update us if they have seen this butterfly recently.

Wow Black Rajah ! The last record I believe was 2-3 years ago by Richard Ong. Good to know that the BJ is still around. With the amount of time you guys spent out there, I will not be surprise if you guys see a live specimens soon.

Simon, you are still as sharp as ever !

Great find and thanks for sharing, Anuj and Simon. It is really good to know that Black Rajahs are still around. Good reminder to be fully alert when one is out in the forests... for you never know, with a bit of luck, a rare butterfly may just come along one's way! :D
