Bird Group

About Bird Group

The Bird Group is a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Nature Society Singapore (NSS).

1986

Inaugurated in 1986 when Nature Society Singapore (NSS) was the Singapore Branch of Malayan Nature Society (MNS).
Our history goes further back to former MNS Singapore Bird Study Group which was active in the 1970s.

1991

NSS emerged from MNS with the Bird Group established to oversee the claims of birds recorded in Singapore, publish the records in the ‘Singapore Avifauna’ and subsequently our blog, as well as update the Bird Checklist.

Today

We conduct regular bird walks at our nature areas, and bird talks covering various aspects of ornithology to promote the appreciation of birds. We also conduct bird surveys, as well as raptor and parrot counts, to keep tabs on the status of our avifauna.

With NSS being the country partner for eBird, the Bird Group also works to review rare and unusual submissions of birds on the free citizen science platform in an effort to make the entries usable for science.

Our Events

We organise a wide range of events open to members and public every month, from educational talks to birdwatching and rewilding activities. Read more about our past events or join us in our upcoming events!

Our Signature Event

Singapore Bird Race

Held annually since 1984, the Singapore Bird Race is one of the longest-running citizen science events in Southeast Asia. Through the race, we aim to promote the appreciation, awareness, and conservation of wild birds in Singapore, as well as to raise awareness about local biodiversity among the general public.
