The Vertebrate Study Group is a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Nature Society Singapore (NSS) dedicated to the study and conservation of vertebrates. Established in 1993, our group focuses on the research and field studies of mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and freshwater fish, filling an important role in understanding and protecting Singapore’s diverse fauna.
Our primary goal is to gather up-to-date data on vertebrates in Singapore and the surrounding region, as we firmly believe that this knowledge is essential for effective conservation efforts.
Through comprehensive field studies conducted at various locations such as Bukit Timah Nature Reserve, Central Catchment Nature Reserve, Pulau Ubin, and Pulau Tekong among others, we aim to deepen our understanding of the local vertebrate populations. Detailed study reports have been prepared for these areas, contributing to our growing knowledge of Singapore’s unique biodiversity.
Unfortunately, Singapore’s rapid development poses significant threats to our native vertebrates. A concerning number of species are facing extinction, particularly those that rely on habitats beyond the existing nature reserves, such as the offshore isles of Tekong Besar and Ubin harbour essential ecosystems. These are homes to endangered species like Wild Pigs, Leopard Cats, Oriental Small-Clawed Otters, and Dugongs, and Finless Porpoises, which are no longer extant elsewhere in Singapore.
To safeguard the diverse habitats and the specialised fauna they harbour, we need your support. Join us in our projects and make a difference now!
We have launched a photographic guide ‘Wild Animals of Singapore,’ featuring mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and freshwater fishes found in Singapore.
