The Marine Conservation Group is a Special Interest Group (SIG) of the Nature Society Singapore (NSS). Our outreach efforts include public talks, booths, publications, photo exhibitions and other marine related events and conferences such as Asia Dive Expo. A series of virtual workshops and talks sprout over the pandemic period as an alternative channel. The group is also constantly involved in various consultations with the government, viewing of Environmental Impact Assessments (EIAs) and subsequent feedback and responses to foreshore development work that have impacts to marine habitats.
SIG formed
To encourage appreciation and preservation of marine biodiversity in Singapore and around the region.
Coral rescue
Relocation of hard corals from reclamation works in 1991, 1993, and 1995. Involving over 450 divers, corals were moved from reefs off the southern coast of Pulau Ayer Chawan, now part of the Jurong Island landmass and relocated to southern Sentosa.
Book published
Published first coffee table book of its kind ‘Singapore Waters – Unveiling Our Seas’ to showcase Singapore marine biodiversity as well as a historical perspective of its coastline.
Started programme
Started Horseshoe Crab Rescue & Research Programme to rescue horseshoe crabs entrapped in deployed and abandoned fishing nets at the Mandai mudflats. It has since evolved into a citizen science program.
