[Online Talk] The Songbird Trade in Southeast Asia

September 21 @ 8:00 pm - 9:00 pm

Please log in here first to register for this event.

Open to the Public

Did you know that Singapore’s singing star, the Straw-headed Bulbul, has been extirpated from or is now extremely rare in most of its native range because of the illegal and unsustainable bird trade? The illegal and unsustainable trade in Asian songbirds affects hundreds of species across multiple countries. Join us for an overview of the issues, highlighting some of the target species at risk and research documenting the scale and impacts of the trade. We will also cover some of the initiatives in recent years to improve international and domestic legal protection for priority species, strengthen the evidence base for conservation action, safeguard unique taxa on the brink of extinction, and engage with songbird buyers and keepers to reduce demand.

Serene Chng is a Programme Manager at TRAFFIC International – Southeast Asia, managing and implementing projects across the region collecting evidence of wildlife trade to guide interventions and influence stakeholders since 2013. She has authored a range of technical reports and scientific papers uncovering the scale and depth of the illegal and unsustainable trade in multiple taxa. Serene is also a Co-coordinator of the IUCN SSC Asian Songbird Trade Specialist Group.

This walk is held in the lead up to the upcoming Singapore Bird Race, stay tuned for more details!
